Materials: Two types of tropical wood including “sangre de cristo,” “Palo de rosa” as they are called in Spanish.
This tradition of hand carving originated in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Maricela Tenorio Flores is the daughter of Juliana Flores Ibarra and Venustiano Tenorio Reyes and is 29 years old. She has one son. She specializes in designing and carving jewelry. She has recently created a facebook page to feature the family’s work.
About the process: To create multicolored pieces, Maricela uses different kinds of tropical wood whose fibers are naturally colored. None of her work has been painted. Therefore, each piece is entirely made out of wood, including the paste with which he uses to adhere together the different pieces. Some of the scenes take months to carve and put together.
