These Shyrdak felt rugs for car seats are hand-made in Kyrgyzstan in the traditional style using methods that have been passed down from generation to generation.

When producing shyrdak traditional methods of processing and dyeing of wool are kept and applied for producing of felt as the main raw material for shyrdak. Traditional technique (fretted mosaic) is kept which is widespread in the north of Kyrgyzstan.

In the south of Kyrgyzstan technique of inlaying of color cord (jeek) prevails more. Cutout ornamented motifs from two pieces of felt of different color create composition each of which is its mirror reflection. The same picture stands out in one part as background, and in other part as pattern creating impression of positive and negative pattern. This equality of pattern and background defines artistic peculiarities of goods.
The border bounding the central field as well as the richness of pattern and skilful using of contrasting harmonization have the great meaning in ornamentation of shyrdak.

Felt is made from local Kyrgyz wool through repeated hand-pressing. Together with Yurts, mountains and nomadic traditions, Felt is an iconographic material that makes up the literal fabric of this stunning country. Shyrdaks are hand-made using locally sourced sheep's wool. Each shyrdak is unique, designed and prepared individually, using the indigenous knowledge Kyrgyz of patterns, symbols, coloring and sewing techniques. First, the wool is pressed, rolled and stamped into felt. It is then dyed and hung out to dry pefore the pattern is created and cut, the yarn is spun and the piece is stiched together.

Zumrat lives with her family in the small village of At Bashy in the remote Naryn region of Kyrgyzstan.She learned how to make shyrdaks from her mother in early childhood. She was given the title " Mother hero" (a way of honoring women who give birth to 7 or more children). Her experience as an entreprenuer started after the colapse of the Soviet Union. She had 10 shyrdaks made by herself at home. She sold those shyrdaks to foreigners at price of 220 soms ($4.00) each. For that money she was able to buy products for her home and supplies for new shyrdaks.

Today, the extra income that Zumrat earns from felt craftworks helps her make meaningful financial contributions to her family's livestock and crops. As a Master Shyrdak maker, she is the leader of Zumrat At Bashy cooperation. Thier cooperation started to work when in September, 2007 the Asian Development Bank Project whose mission is “Improving Livelihoods of Rural Women through Development of Handicraft Industry.” Financing from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction started its implementation. The specific objective of the Project is to increase income and job opportunities for poor women in selected rural areas of the Kyrgyz Republic by improving productivity, diversification, and products' quality while establishing efficient marketing services and facilities. “Daiiry” Coordination and Marketing Center has been created to provide access for rural handicraft cooperatives to the market.
