To create multicolored pieces, Maricela uses different kinds of tropical wood whose fibers are naturally colored. None of her work has been painted.  Therefore, each piece is entirely made out of wood, including the paste with which she uses to adhere together the different pieces. Some of the larger Scenes such as this one and the Trees of Life take months to carve and put together.
