Every stitch tells a story.
Toy maker Jumagolova Erkebu has been making charming felt works in Kyrgyzstan's capital of Bishkek since 1975. She first began exploring the intricacy of felted hand-craft work while studying during Soviet times in the city's Professional Artists College. It was while studying that she found her "voice" as an artist, and has been dedicated to making her pieces exclusively with felt (no mixed media) ever since.
Jumagolova's felt animals and ancient folk heroes reflect the nomadic traditions, history, and mountain-centered culture of Kyrgyzstan. She lives in Bishkek with her husband and daughter.

Felt is made from local Kyrgyz wool through repeated hand-pressing. Together with Yurts, mountains, and nomadic traditions, Felt is an iconographic material that makes up the literal fabric of this stunning country.
