Whitewashed Terracotta Elephant Planter
Bijoly Rani
Corr the Jute Works / CJWBD
Bangladesh
About 250 kilometers south of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, lies the small coastal town of Bauphal. Here, a cooperative of 40 talented artisans work on terracotta goods, like the planter in your box. But in recent years, plastic goods have flooded Bangladesh markets, leaving little demand for artisanal methods. With this fall in demand, the livelihoods of many artisans were in peril. Potters who once relied on their skills to feed themselves and their families now found themselves without a job. Luckily, our partner, CORR the Jute Works, began to work with the female artisans of Bauphal to connect them with a global market. They helped form a cooperative led by local female artisans that self-organizes to provide fair wages to their artisans. Marginalized women from rural areas are now able to work from home, and thus take care of their children while earning an income.
One of the artisans who was able to benefit from this cooperation was the talented Bijoly Rani, who has been working with pottery for the last 22 years. She is married and has three children. The training that she received from our Fair Trade partner has enabled her to provide a better life for her family. Receiving fair pay for her hard work, while working in comfortable conditions, has made it easier to provide her children with more nutritious meals and a better education.
Suggested use:  Plant your favorite plant baby in the ever-so-adorable Whitewashed Terracotta Elephant Planter.

Wood Carved Paper Pot Maker
Mohd Danish
Matr Boomie
India
Creating biodegradable paper pots for your new seedlings to thrive was just made easier all thanks to Mohd Danish. Danish specializes in using machinery to create wooden products for Matr Boomie. Danish comes from a crafting village in India, which is where he originally learned the craft from his elder brothers.
To create the Wood Carved Paper Pot Maker, Danish starts out with a piece of mango wood. The wood is  cut into smaller pieces and then marked for desired shape, design, and size. Next, Danish places the mango wood piece onto a turning machine that revolves the piece around to cut, giving a circular shape to the wood piece. After, he uses sandpaper to give finishing to the piece, then it is polished with natural buffing. Danish saves the best part for last, which is engraving the Wood Carved Paper Pot Maker with a laser machine.
Suggested use: Wrap a piece of elongated paper around the cylindrical portion of the Wood Carved Paper Pot Maker, leaving ¾” from the bottom of the base. Fold the ¾” of paper under the base of the cylinder. Press the cylinder into the base to stamp out your paper pot, then release and it is ready for soil and seeds.

Santosh Ji
Matr Boomie
India
Santosh Ji is a strong, resilient, and empowering woman who is the walking definition of taking life’s lemons and turning them into lemonade. Married at a young age and uneducated, Santosh did not let any of life’s circumstances get in the way of finding her path. Most women from Santosh’s village found work cleaning or sweeping other homes, but Santosh decided she was going to go a different way and empower herself with hand skills to join Matr Boomie to do work that would earn her respect as an artisan.
As an uneducated woman, Santosh had initial difficulties with her role as an artisan because she could not keep count of the products she had created. Over time, she was able to train and learn to count and sign her own name. Her quiet and shy personality takes a back seat when it comes to work as an artisan due to her high level of work performance. Thank you Santosh for showing us that strength can lead the way to a prosperous future!
