Providing Computer Classes for Artisans in Morocco

We work with artisans all over the world to bring our subscribers beautiful handmade products. Every month, our Artisan Fund raises money for one of those groups, so that as well as helping to create fair and sustainable wages for artisans, we can contribute to projects that matter to their community. We work closely with our partners to create a program that meets the specialized needs of a particular group.

This past May, we raised a total of $1080 to provide computer learning classes for 5 artisans! This fund enabled us to provide courses in both cities of Marrakech and Safi in Morocco, that taught artisans basic computer skills. The classes started in July and continued in the month of September.

These classes were held twice a week and each lasted for 2 hours. Each course covered various computer software and topics such as Microsoft Office Word, Excel, internet research, and basic computer usage skills. The artisans were very grateful for the learning experience and were eager to use what they learned as a future reference. 2 of the artisans participated in classes held in Safi and the other 3 artisans learned in Marrakech.

“I really wanted to learn how to work on the computer as much as I wanted to learn English. It was a dream come true… I, at least, know the basics and how to get some things done on the computer,” says Bouchra, one of the artisans who was able to participate in these courses. She says that she is thinking of continuing her computer studies.

According to an article by Morocco World News, computer and technological supplies and sparse for some groups in Morocco. In result, there is very little usage of modern technology for some groups and the main reason that was cited was 60.4% believed that it was too expensive.

Another article by Morocco World News, describes the different quality of IT/ICT education between rural and urban regions, “…there are insufficient computer materials at the disposal of students and teachers alike. Further, modern technology is rarely used…”

With the generous support from our Mavens, we were able to provide these 5 artisans the basic skills and knowledge of using computers. These skills will help improve their overall usage of modern technology and familiarize these artisans with various computer softwares.

At GlobeIn, we aim to continue to create new Artisan Funds and raise money to help propel artisans towards their goals. With your help, we know that our own goals to educate and achieve equal opportunity will become a reality!
